Malaria: The Facts

A child dies every 30 seconds from malaria.

Malaria is a preventable and treatable infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Without proper protection, mosquitos are nearly impossible to escape. They penetrate exposed skin and flush malarial microbes directly into the bloodstream which can ultimately lead to death.

Malaria kills more than one million people each year, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa, where malaria is the leading cause of death for children under five. The majority of these children die within 48 hours of the onset of illness. Yet only a fraction of the children have Long-Lasting  Insecticide-Treated Nets.

Malaria Facts

  • A child in Africa dies every 30 seconds from malaria
  • Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease
  • Malaria kills almost 1 million people, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa every single year
  • Approximately 90 per cent of all malaria deaths currently occur in sub-Saharan Africa and most of these deaths are among children under five years of age
  • Malaria-related illnesses and deaths cost Africa’s economies alone USD12 billion per year
  • A Long-Lasting  Insecticide-Treated Net costs only $10 and can protect a child from malaria
  • UNICEF is the world’s largest distributor of Long-Lasting  Insecticide-Treated Nets. In 2009 UNICEF distributed close to 43 million nets for 49 countries to protect children
  • Malaria infects 247 million people per year
  • UNICEF's campaign for the Roll Back Malaria partnership will save an estimated 4.2 million lives by 2015 in the 20 African countries where malaria is most prevalent

The most effective way to prevent mosquitoes from biting is for children to sleep under a Long-Lasting  Insecticide-Treated Net . Something so simple can be all it takes to keep a child safe from this deadly disease.

A MOSQUITO NET CAN BE ALL IT TAKES:

  • $140 can provide 14 nets
  • $280 can provide 28 nets
  • $500  can provide 50 nets
