WHAT IS WORKPLACE GIVING?

Workplace Giving is a simple and effective way for employees to donate to charities who are entitled to receive tax deductible donations, such as UNICEF Australia, directly through their pay. Employers and employees will, through Workplace Giving, assist UNICEF to promote and protect the rights of children.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WORKPLACE GIVING?

Workplace Giving programs provide a unique set of benefits for employers, employees and UNICEF Australia alike:

Employers: Workplace Giving can provide a low cost, administratively simple way to build employee morale and loyalty. Participating in Workplace Giving is also a great way for companies to show corporate social responsibility. It demonstrates that a business is committed ethically and commercially to the long-term economic and social development of communities and families worldwide. This in turn sends positive signals to investors, shareholders, employees and customers alike.

Employees: Workplace Giving is voluntary and is an easy and convenient way for employees to make a donation each pay run. It enables affordable giving through a transparent and trustworthy program. Employees are able to make donations to UNICEF Australia in an efficient and tax-effective manner, eliminating the need to collect receipts or wait until the end of the year to claim a tax refund.

UNICEF Australia: Workplace Giving provides long term, stable funding for core programs enabling us to plan ahead and develop even more effective programs. This funding involves little or no administrative cost as there is no need to receipt individual donors.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Employers offer employees the opportunity to donate a set amount each pay to UNICEF Australia through a Workplace Giving program (see link to the right, under publications, for example wording which can be cut and pasted into communication).

Employees agree to participate in the program by donating a regular amount each pay – as much or as little as they like. All donations of $2 or over are tax deductible.

The money is deducted from the employees’ salaries via the payroll system - either post or pre-tax.

UNICEF Australia provides a tax receipt to the company, not each employee, after the end of the financial year.

It is the responsibility of the company to provide tax notification to employees who donate.

UNICEF Australia quarterly sends out electronic updates about what funds are helping to achieve to companies to be forwarded on to participating employees.
