Parliamentarians Unite for UNICEF

The Australian Parliamentary Association for UNICEF was founded in 1987. The Association was the first of its kind in the world, and other similar groups have subsequently been formed in many other countries.

The Australian Parliamentary Association for UNICEF primarily supports three goals:

  • To support and promote the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child
  • To promote in both the Parliament and the community the work of UNICEF for women and children
  • To encourage the Australian government to give priority support to children and women in Australia’s overseas development program.

The role of the Australian Parliamentary Association for UNICEF is to:

  • Support the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
  • In the course of their day to day activities, support and advocate, where appropriate, UNICEF’s mandate and it’s work in the Asia Pacific region.
  • Support UNICEF’s developmental work.
  • Support UNICEF’s work in humanitarian emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Support UNICEF’s education for development program in Australia.

The Australian Parliamentary Association for UNICEF currently has over 60 members representing all political parties. The current Chair of the Parliamentary Association is Melissa Parke MP and the Deputy Chair is Senator Simon Birmingham.
